Tigers Win Bill Frye Invitational, Defeated Mansfield 64-39

By Buck Ringgold TIMES RECORD

Charleston was a late addition to the Bill Frye Invitational, replacing Hartford, which withdrew from the tournament.

The Tigers were needing to pick up some games on the heels of their football team’s run to the 3A State Championship, which ended the weekend before Christmas. With the basketball team bolstered by the addition of those football players, Charleston put together a dominating run through the tournament, capped by the win in the title game Monday.

Mansfield hung tough with Charleston through one quarter, as Charleston held a one-point lead. But in the second quarter, Charleston (6-4) outscored Mansfield, 21-10, with 15 of those points scored by junior Matthew Ward.

“They came out and made it interesting,” Charleston coach B.J. Ross said. “We never know what we’re going to get right now in our third game out of football since football lasted so long, but I thought our kids did a good job of playing hard, I thought we really did a good job (Monday).”

Ward ended up leading all scorers with 27 points, 24 coming in the first half. He also hit two 3’s in the win.

Andrew Smith added 16 points for Charleston. Carl Jones had 19 points and Ben Fisher 10 for Mansfield (3-8).
