Gray Fenter Selected To USA Baseball 18U Trials Roster
CARY, N.C. - The 44 names that will make up the roster for the 18U National Team Trials later this summer were announced by USA Baseball following the completion of the 2014 Tournament of Stars presented by Major League Baseball. Trials will be held in Houston, from Aug. 23 to Aug. 29, and the final 20-man roster for the USA Baseball 18U National Team will be announced after the event.
The announcement of the names was made on the field at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., following the gold-medal game of the Tournament of Stars. The event is held annually and serves as the primary selection vehicle for the 18U National Team Trials roster. Out of the 108 athletes that attended the tournament, 34 have been named to the trials roster. Those 34 are joined by ten additional players that were named to trials through the 2013 17U National Team Identification Series and 2013 17U National Team Development Program. Nine alternates were also named to the roster.
The 44 names on the 18U National Team Trials roster and the nine alternates represent 16 different states throughout the country. California led all states with 16 athletes represented on the roster, followed by Florida with the next highest number of players at 10.
Following trials, 20 players will be selected to the final roster for the 2014 18U National Team. The team will then go on to compete in the 18U COPABE Pan American Championship in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The international tournament will take place starting Sept. 5 through Sept. 14.
In 2014, the 18U National Team will be led by Grand Canyon University head coach, Andy Stankiewicz, who has also served as the assistant coach on the 2012 Collegiate National Team that won bronze at the Haarlem Honkbal Week tournament in the Netherlands. Stankiewicz is joined by assistant coaches, Jayson King and Burt Call, pitching coach, Jamey Shouppe, and certified athletic trainer, Jamey Gordon. The team administration will be overseen by newly named 18U National Team director, Shaun Cole.
