Charleston 55, Lamar 39

BOYS — After going unbeaten in conference play, Charleston (25-5) sailed through the district tournament.

Matthew Ward had 18 points with four 3-pointers and Andrew Smith had 13 for the Tigers.

“We just try to focus on winning each quarter,” Charleston coach B.J. Ross said. “We may not always play our best, but we always play hard. And if you do that, you defense and rebounding can keep you in the game when you are not shooting it well.”

Daniel McCarley had 17 points for Lamar.

Lamar was within 18-16 after one quarter and 23-20 at the half. But Charleston pulled away with a 16-8 third quarter.

“Lamar is always going to be tough to beat, especially at their place,” Ross said. “McCarley always seems to have a big first half against us, but we seem to adjust and settle down defensively and do a better job in the second half on him.”
