Charleston Claws Past Mansfield

Charleston girls head coach Jason Rucker said before his team’s game against Mansfield on Thursday that he expected a fight. He got one.

Charleston stayed in contention in the 3A-4 race with a hard-fought 45-40 win against struggling Mansfield.

“That group of Mansfield girls won the conference when they were in junior high,” Rucker said. “They are very athletic and they have girls that can shoot the ball. They are going to be tough the rest of this year and in the district tournament.”

Brittany Furr led Charleston (10-9, 6-2) with 14 points by hitting four high-arcing “moonball” 3-pointers. Morgan Prescott and Peyton Oldridge both had nine.

“They came out in a triangle-and-two on Peyton and Morgan and we needed some people to step it up and take advantage of that,” Rucker said. “Brittany is a good 3-point shooter, and she hit some big ones tonight.”

Mansfield led 15-14 after the first quarter and the game was tied at 23 at the halftime break.

Furr knocked down a 3 to start the second half, which started a run that had Charleston pushing ahead 34-30 heading to the fourth quarter. Prescott scored six of her points in the fourth quarter, hitting 4-of-4 on free throws.

Mansfield was still within three at 43-40 inside the final minute. But Taylor Jones netted a pair of free throws with 9.1 seconds left to finally ice the game.

Mansfield (11-8, 2-6) was paced by 15 points from Kaylie Pyles, eight from Erin Reano and seven from Erica McKay.
