Father David Bellinghausen, OSB

Father David Bellinghausen, OSB, 74, a monk of Subiaco Abbey, died June 16, 2013, in Fort Smith. He had been pastor of St. Mary Church in Altus for the past year and a half.

He was born Aug. 31, 1939, in Rhineland, Texas, the ninth child in a family of 10 children of Hubert and Rosa Duesterhaus Bellinghausen. He graduated from Rhineland High School in 1957, attended North Texas State University in Denton and graduated in 1983 from St. Joseph Seminary College in Covington, La.

He entered Subiaco Abbey in 1960 and worked in the abbey press until it closed in 1981. During this time, he was also active in the marriage encounter movement and in teaching high school religion. He did seminary studies in Louisiana and in Rome and was ordained a priest in 1986. Besides his pastorate at Altus, he had held pastorates at Muenster, Texas, and Clarksville and was prior in Subiaco Abbey from 1997-2012.

He is survived by two sisters, Catherine Pavlicer of Colleyville, Texas, and Phyllis Barker of Fort Worth, Texas; and three brothers, Urban of Munday, Texas, Alvin of Amarillo, Texas, and Charles of Justin, Texas.

A Christian wake service was held at 7 p.m. Friday, and the liturgy of Christian burial was celebrated on Saturday in St. Benedict Church in Subiaco. Interment was in the abbey cemetery under the direction of Roller Funeral Home in Paris.
