Charleston Springfest 5k Run This Saturday
It is almost time for the 4th annual Charleston 5k, this year affectionately named the Grub Run, since the Charleston Ministerial Alliance, food bank in particular, is the benefactor. We have had a lot of entries already and we greatly appreciate the community support, Sheila Hiatt said. It isn’t to late to show your support. Simply contact Sheila Hiatt at Charleston5k@yahoo.com, or just show up this Saturday morning the 26th at 7:00am and they can get you set up to walk or run. Either way it all goes to a wonderful cause.
I am excited about this year’s 5k for several reasons, Sheila said. “First it is helping to feed the hungry in our area and secondly we have chip timing.”
Lately, Charleston has been flooded with charity events and that alone says something about the hearts of each and every member in this community, Sheila said. “I do hope that you will join us with this cause also, with the money staying right here in our community.”
Most of us have no problem putting food on our tables, but I do think you would be surprised at the number of people right here in our area that aren’t sure where their next meal is coming from, Sheila added. “Historically, food drives are held in the fall in preparation for the holiday season, but people need help year around. It is our hopes that enough is raised through this event for the food bank to be stocked through the fall.”
We have a lot of volunteers putting their time and energy in to this event and I do hope you will come out and show your support, Sheila said. “If you aren’t a participant or a volunteer, you can still help by showing up and cheering the participants along. You can’t imagine how much encouragement a smiling face or a catchy sign can mean when you are totally and physically given out.”
Also, I want to do a last minute challenge out the younger people in the community, Sheila said. “It is no secret that we have a lot of very talented athletics in Charleston, however, in looking over our entries thus far I see very few, if any of them taking part in this event.”
Medal categories are 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60+. Medals will be awarded in each category 3 deep for male and female.
I am surprised every year at how few 13-19 year olds take part in this event, Sheila said. “Don’t you want to know who can do a 5k in the shortest amount of time? I know I do. It is a fun event, don’t miss out.”
