Charleston Springfest 5k Run April 26
It is that time of year again. The 4th annual Charleston Springfest 5k, this year named the Grub Run, will take place at 8:00 am, April 26, starting just outside of the Charleston Fair grounds. A big addition to the race this year will be the fact that we are using chip timing, Sheila Hiatt said. I know in years past the race results took a bit of time to determine, because it was all calculated manually, so as race organizers we are excited about this addition, Sheila added. “As a participant, getting the official placement results faster is sure to be well received.”
The first year of this 5k was in 2011, it was just a fun run, no timing, no medals, no t-shirts or goodie bags, but it was successful enough that we decided to make it happen annually in conjunction with the Charleston Springfest, Sheila said.
In 2012, the race was subtitled “Paws for a Cause” with the Charleston Dog shelter the benefactor. The following year brought the “Inferno Run” with all proceeds going to the Charleston Rural Fire Department. This year it will be named the “Grub Run” with everything raised going to the Ministerial Alliance, more specifically the local food pantry.
Last year there were roughly 125 participants. This year let’s aim for 150 or more, Sheila said. One important factor about the Charleston Springfest 5k is that all proceeds have always stayed in Charleston. Local area businesses are generous in supporting the race by sponsoring the shirts that the racers get as part of their entry fee and also by donating promotional items that are put in racers goodie bag. It has been rumored that we have the best race goodie bags around. So a big thanks to our sponsors in advance, Sheila said.
This year medal categories are being expanded to include a category for 60+ male and female. That makes the race categories look like this, 12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60+, for both male and female. There will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each category
