When school is not in session, the Charleston School District allows public use of the storm shelter when there is a specific need to provide shelter for citizens of the Charleston community.
PER FEMA REGULATIONS, THE ONLY ANIMALS ALLOWED INSIDE THE SHELTER ARE CERTIFIED SERVICE ANIMALS. THEREFORE, PERSONAL PETS ARE NOT ALLOWED.
Selected district personnel, City of Charleston, Charleston Fire Department, and Charleston Police Department personnel monitor weather conditions. The facility is opened when the National Weather Service issues a “tornado warning” for Franklin County. The shelter will NOT be opened for thunderstorm warnings.
Individuals responding to severe weather will assist private citizens during a tornado warning who wish to enter the shelter after school hours. The shelter must be vacated when the immediate weather threat has expired.
The Charleston School District assumes no responsibility for accidents or injuries that might occur during the public use of this facility.
